Announcement-My Nano '05 will be closed and archived until next November
Dear friends,
Following my successful attempt at Nanowrimo, I hereby announce that this blog will be closed and archived. I am not sure if I will be able to participate in next year's Nanowrimo due to heavy work commitments.

It has been a wonderful yet nerve-wracking month for me. The story remains unfinished as of today and I suppose I need to discipline myself to sit down and just get it over and done with. Somehow the motivation to continue just decreases as soon as one has completed the required target.

Here's a brief introduction of the story. Hope it wont be a spoiler. :P

Toby, a solicitor practising in London is engaged to Freda, a college tutor. Both are descendants of affluent and prominent families in the community and their engagement is a strategic alliance of both families. Both Toby and Freda had to give up their respective lovers in order to fulfil their duty as descendants of the Kelp and Gee empire.

Staying under one roof with a man whom she absolutely loathes, Freda decides to rent out the remaining rooms, one to a young aspiring student, Lynette who is doing her first year in B.Mus, majoring in composition, and Andrew, a quiet guy who works at the local council as an administrative clerk.

Both Lynette and Freda are haunted by their past memories... Freda constantly tries to suppress her feelings for her first love, Hayden Brasspole, who had vanished into thin air the day she broke the news of her imminent engagement to Toby Kelp. Lynette has mixed emotions towards her draconian father, Lincoln who constantly indoctrinated her about her mother's vile actions. Lynette's only memory of her mother lies in three music scores, handwritten by her mother before she left their house. She clutches the manuscripts as if they were her life and at a later part of the story, these manuscripts were the key documents to her finding her mother.

Freda's mother, a victim herself, thinks of the life she would have led had she not married Freda's father. Her first husband was killed before her eyes and her firstborn son was snatched away from her when he was barely a month old. She was forced into marrying Freda's father and had never forgived him since.

A strange friendship develops between Freda and Lynette, both sharing coffee over late night chats about their lives, as Toby engages in a sexual frenzy with Betty, his university sweetheart and now, an intern at the firm which he works. He knows it is only a matter of time before his father summons his eternal prescence in Kelp Incorporated, but for now, he was happy in his day job which gave him a perfectly legitimate reason to stay back late at nights riding his Betty in the comfort of his office.

A dying Lincoln summons Lynette to his bedside and tells her that her mother, Jennifer is very much alive and is currently in Shanghai, China. A decision is quickly made. Lynette would embark on a new journey to Shanghai in search of her mother.

So, how does it sound? Interested? Next instalment will be featured in my main blog, Memory Lane. Till then, enjoy this synopsis and yeah... let the comments flow!

Ladies and gentlemen,
I am pleased to announce that the novel entitled "Shades of Grey" hit the 50,000 word mark on 21.11.2005!
The story is not yet finished, so I will be working on the story in my own time from now onwards. No more crazy deadlines to adhere to.

End of week 2-so far so good
Hi guys,
Today marks the last day of week 2 of Nanowrimo. I have just crossed the 50% mark and am working real hard right now to hit at least 60% by tonight.
I have added a word count script on the left bar of this blog. If you are a Nano-er as well, feel free to use the script to calculate your word count. Just copy your document and paste it in the table and click on "count". Its a much reliable word counter compared to MS word.  Thanks to Mei for the information.
Am constantly interrupted during the course of nano-ing. grrr....
Will keep everyone updated of my progress.
Cya soon....

Some thoughts on Nano-ing
Today marks the 8th day of Nanowrimo and I have coughed up 17k worth of words. Nothing to brag about really, since I know I won't be writing that as much for this week. Work is piling up (As usual)
The storyline seems to change every single second. I know I am fickle minded but I didn't know I was THIS fickle minded.

One thing about Nano-its not easy, especially when you have a stressful day job. Hopefully, all will go well.

And I discovered something: I ain't good at fantasy fiction. I write from the heart. So is that a good thing?

No excerpts today. Hope you guys dont mind. I kinda want to do something else about my novel so probably you won't see it here.
Or maybe you will
eheheh

The way its going, I think most of the cast wont make the cut
Precisely. I am now literally cramming bits and pieces of ideas here, there and everywhere. I come up with about 2k words when a tidal wave of creativity hits me. So yeah, sorry to dissappoint everyone, but the story is going to be very very very different from what i had originally planned for it to be. Ah. fickle minded Pisceans.
Anyway, I have finally hit the 5 figure mark and going.
Till the next update then...

How's it getting on so far
Thanks to the long holidays I have this weekend, nano-ing has been so far, pretty smooth. Of course i am not making record breaking progress like 16,000 words per day or something like that, but at least well, I am writing. And the word count is increasing, slowly. Everybody writes at their own pace.

I found out that the best way to do this, is to forget about the logical factor. The moment you get inspired, or the idea pops into your head, just write it down. You can always rearrange your thoughts later.

Ok. Back to writing. Cya in a bit!
U can have a look at the progress meter on the left to see how many words I have written so far. Point to note: Don't compare with others. It will drive you crazy. Just do your best.

Excerpts from my novel 1
Status update: As of today, I have yet to give my novel a name. When the inspiration comes, I will post it up here. Now enjoy this excerpt, hehe

The concert
... And there she was, her fingers gracefully gliding across the ivory white keyboard. He could not see her face, but her soft, bouncy curls with that healthy glow was enough to drive his heart crazy. Andrew started to think to himself.. what have I been doing all my life? When she was always there for me... all I could do was to think of work, work and work... never had I given the both of us a chance to know each other better...
He knew secretly in his heart, that he had fallen for her. But her heart had been broken countless times, and it was always by him. She played so well, as if the song and her had become one... because she could feel her heart breaking as she played the song. Her song, which she had composed to commemorate the day they met... and to seal their fate that they could never ever be together. As much as she loved him, and she knew he had feelings for her, his constant coldness sent a shiver down her spine. She tried to forgive him on endless occassions, telling herself that perhaps, he just needed time to get over his ex, but she knew, no matter how hard she tried, she would never ever be the one.
Freda's words rang true in her heart: "Men who do not love you, will not reject you either. But they will never give you your heart, even though you have opened up your heart for him to see."
Yes... she had given him far too many chances and opportunities, and he had screwed them all.
As all these thoughts were running in her head, she did a beautiful, flawless glissando at the final 4 bars of her song. Never could she ever get it right during practice.
But tonight, she did it. For the first time.
A breakthrough in her performance, as if this was a silent message telling her that it was time to move on.
For the first time in years since he was dumped, tears rolled from Andrew's eyes. He knew he had let her down... and there was nothing he could do to undo the damage that he had caused.
It was too late...

Excerpts from my novel 2
He found it hard to sleep...
The confusion was just so great. What did he feel exactly about her? Why was he behaving in this way?
He climbed out of bed and run his fingers through his hair.
"I like it when you do that, its as if you effortlessly put style back into your hair, without having to use a comb"
Grabbing his Malboro lights from the table, he took a puff.
"Geez, you really should stop smoking...look at you. You are barely 30 and you look like you are in your forties, hehee" her words rang in his head.
But why was he indirectly rejecting her?
The events of the night before haunted his mind. Reluctant to leave his car, she hugged him hard and tears starting rolling down her face. He responded by holding her close to him. Not one word was uttered as they remained in embrace. He knew there must be a lot of things going on in her head... but he was too afraid to ask her.
"Are you going to be alright?" he asked, when she finally broke loose from his arms.
"I have to be... I don't have a choice." was her answer, before she climbed out of his car hastily and left.
"You idiot," he thought to himself, "what the hell is going on with you?"
A relationship destined for doom which finally ended a year ago had left him very much jaded about girls... not until she came along. She had a very headstrong character, a totally different kind of girl which he never expected to meet.
He started to think back.. of the first impressions he had of her...
She was a cute girl with a very exotic face. She exuded confidence and charm... and she was very independent.
They chatted on the phones during weekdays, weekends, texted each other like crazy... so why was he being so cold hearted, he thought.
"Man," he thought to himself. "I even postponed a client's appointment just to meet her." So what was it?
Did he not feel anything for her?
What about the times when they both blamed their inhibitions on alcohol, and flirted crazily with each other over drinks?
There must be something which drew him to her. He was unconsciously falling for her, whether he wanted to control himself, or not.
She was a very special girl. A girl so special, you don't realise that you are falling in love with her until she's not there.
He decides to call her. Something had to be done... he couldnt let her do guesswork any longer. He knew that he wanted to be with her. She cracked jokes so funny it makes his stomach ache to hear them.
She had a voice so beautiful he thought she was an angel.
The way she looked at him and laughed, was absolutely indescribable.
And she picks up the phone.
"Hello?"
"Hi Debbie. Its me"
"I know. Its getting kinda late. Why arent you sleeping?"
"Nah...
